Why is Stylus (and Stylus variables) deprecated?

This is quite sad for me as I much prefer Stylus with its ability to parse both CSS and indented syntax.

I read somewhere that it was too much of a burden to support 2 css parsers and they choose Sass over Stylus.

Sass is much, much more popular in the frontend world and why it was chosen as the primary css parser.
