Load data from server into data table

I’ve had a look at the data table component, I really like how it uses slots to customize columns. However, I don’t think I can simply put the whole table in the component. While the component itself might be pretty fast, I don’t want to send hundreds of kilobytes from the server to the client.

I currently can’t see an easy way to achieve this. I basically would have to change the sorting, searching and paging to an event which then loads and replaces the data.

Is there anything I’m missing or is this simply not possible right now?
